Our Legal Status
AFRISA was established by the Makerere University council at its 118th sitting on 23rd March 2010. It is a Non-Profit organization that is owned and guaranteed by the University council. It is an autonomous corporate, governed by an independent board of Directors.It is this Board that makes sure that AFRISA is working to fulfill its mission and is accountable to the University council.
The AFRISA Institute is headed by an Executive Director and the Board of Directors has persons from the public and private sectors, academia as well as international representation. AFRISA also has a Secretariat headed by the Executive director who is responsible for the administration, supervision and coordination of its day to day activities.
So far, the Institute has been fully registered, with an Executive Board, and the AFRISA block has been identified to house the institute at the faculty of Veterinary Medicine. Additionally, the ministry of Agriculture (MAAIF) has allocated land (Ranch 16 in Kiboga District) for AFRISA activities. The JICA project in partnership with the Ministry of Agriculture, Animal Industry and Fisheries (MAAIF) will also contribute to AFRISA’S proposed Public Veterinary Diagnostic centre project. Furthermore, the UK Department for International Development (DFID) is also contributing to development of student based community service in Northern Uganda for atleast 12 months.
